Kook & Geniet
Have you ever tried cooking or baking while being blindfolded? Scary thought…?
Now imagine you are blind and being given the opportunity to learn and master new skills in the kitchen. This can be so empowering…
All of us have the need and desire to be good at something no matter our circumstances or abilities. This need or desire is no different for our 360+ visually impaired and/or multi-disabled residents at Innovation for the Blind (IftB). We provide training and assistance in several workshops and programmes where residents can master some or other skill and find purpose in their talents.
Our “Kook & Geniet” (Cook & Enjoy) programme was initiated to provide a safe and supported environment for our residents to put their baking and cooking skills to the test. And with great success!!! The programme involves 15 to 20 residents who take turns cooking and/or baking for events held at IftB, such as making soup for Mandela Day, tomato relish for the selling of boerewors rolls, and baking cupcakes and cookies for several other special events such as our Barista Day here at IftB.
As much as we enjoy people appreciating our talents, it’s also important for residents like Jaco, Zentia, Esmé and Sunet to experience the feeling of empowerment and appreciation for the food they have prepared or the baked goods they have poured their hearts into. This programme promotes social interaction, cognitive skills, sensory stimulation, skill development and teamwork. Being part of this initiative improves confidence, self-awareness, gives purpose and leads to improved quality of life.
For this programme to live up to expectations, for our residents and clients, we need resources to keep it running. If you wish to support or contribute in whichever way possible, you are welcome to contact us.
